What are they?
Article 4 Directions are made when the character of an area of acknowledged importance would be threatened. They are most common in conservation areas. You will probably know if your property is affected by such a Direction, but you can check with the Council if you are not sure. The issuing of an Article 4 Direction means that planning permission is required for work which normally does not need permission, in an area specified under the Direction.
Conservation areas are areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. They are designated locally by the Council and include town centres, villages and residential areas. They are designated through Article 4 Directions.
A copy of the Directions and maps defining the affected properties, in the borough, can be inspected on the Article 4 Directions document download page.
Please note, since the ward boundaries have changed, in Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough, the Abbey Conservation Area is now located in St Mary's Ward.
