Work has taken place aimed at easing flooding problems at two borough cemeteries
Contractors have completed works along Skey Drive to help clear gulleys and roots that have caused a blockage for water drainage and will help to combat pooling water at Bucks Hill Cemetery.
Land drains are also being installed within the cemetery to support the flooding issues.
Trees have been removed in Attleborough Cemetery to prepare for piping work that will be installed by Network Rail to try and prevent water backing up in the cemetery.
Cllr Tim Jenkins, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Communities and Health, said:
"The Council is determined to tackle these issues at our cemeteries and following extensive work last year we had already prevented the graves from flooding at Bucks Hill Cemetery, which was subject to frequent flooding.
“We now need to complete drainage works to prevent the lower road from retaining water after significant rain.
"In addition to the cemetery, we have also carried out work along Skey Drive, Nuneaton, to prevent water pooling which was a potential risk for road users.
“Lack of attention had allowed trees and reeds to grow along Skey Drive and the roots from these had blocked all the drainage points from the road, causing significant flooding and creating a dangerous situation for motorists.
"At Attleborough Cemetery, water from the railway embankment after heavy rainfall was causing extensive flooding there too.
“Network Rail has agreed to carry out work to rectify this at their expense, but we have had to remove two trees to enable access for them to install the new drainage pipes.
"Once all this work has been completed, hopefully these cemeteries will be free from flooding, and we will ensure to put in place a regular check that all drainage systems are running freely."
