Mediation
Mediation is the process of bringing two parties in dispute together to discuss and agree a way forward.
Mediation can be a very powerful tool in tackling anti-social behaviour (ASB) at an early stage, although it is recognised that it isn't appropriate in all cases and ASB/Community Safety Officers are trained to recognise when this is the case.
The process is facilitated by trained mediators who are independent and impartial of both the parties.
Upon both parties involved in a report consenting to mediation, mediators will make contact and listen to their opinions and a meeting will be arranged. This provides both parties an opportunity to speak and listen in a secure and safe setting.
An agreement may be reached about the best way forward and is based on an agreement decided by both parties, not one imposed upon them.
The strength of mediation lies in the communication being directly between the involved parties and empowers them to resolve their own dispute, rather than the case manager taking a view following an investigation and impose an enforcement tool.
Whilst mediation is typically associated as an early intervention, it can also be used for more longstanding disputes as long as all parties are willing.
